Lithuania’s PM Announces Resignation, Sparking Cabinet Collapse
"Having made the decision to resign as prime minister, I announce that the 19th Government of Lithuania is resigning," Paluckas stated during a government session, as reported by a public broadcaster.
Paluckas will formally hand his resignation to President Gitanas Nauseda, who is expected to nominate a new prime minister within 15 days for parliamentary approval.
Following parliamentary confirmation, the newly appointed prime minister will have another 15 days to form a cabinet and outline the government’s agenda.
The current ruling coalition, comprised of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), Nemunas Dawn party, and the Democrats “For Lithuania,” holds 86 out of 141 parliamentary seats. This coalition is anticipated to undergo adjustments once the new administration takes shape.
Paluckas announced his departure as both prime minister and LSDP party leader on Thursday after President Nauseda gave him a two-week deadline to address public concerns about his past business dealings and alleged ethical violations, or to resign.
