Lithuania Declares Emergency Due to Flooding
This decision aims to provide more organized and nationwide assistance to the farmers struggling due to the extreme weather conditions, as stated by the Lithuanian government on Wednesday.
Prior to this national declaration, 14 municipalities had already issued local emergency declarations to address the crisis.
According to the government statement, “The long rainy period damaged or destroyed from 50% to 70% of the harvest.”
Furthermore, in several impacted regions, farmers are still unable to harvest their crops due to widespread flooding. The statement also noted that farmers would be unable to meet their contractual obligation to plant new crops by August 15.
The prolonged rainy period began in late May, with rainfall in June and July becoming the second heaviest on record, only surpassed by the rainfall levels recorded in 2007.
The government highlighted that in many areas, the soil has become so saturated that even brief showers now result in flooding.
With the state of emergency in place, the government can lift certain deadlines and administrative restrictions, allowing farmers to concentrate on harvesting, said Lithuanian Deputy Agriculture Minister Andrius Palionis during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, according to a public broadcaster.
In a similar move, neighboring Latvia declared its own state of emergency last week in response to significant damage to its agricultural sector caused by frost, rain, and floods in recent months.
